This year's winner of the
Giller Prize for the best book of fiction in Canada. And what a book it is! The bishop’s man is Duncan MacAskill, a Catholic priest who becomes known as the "Exorcist" because he is repeatedly called on by his bishop to deal with the fallout of indiscretions of area priests. MacAskill’s challenge is to deal not only with the miscreant priests, but also with the victims they leave behind – abused boys, pregnant girls, angry communities. Set in the Maritimes (MacIntyre’s home turf), the novel examines the impact of the widespread abuse from the 1970s to the present. Duncan MacAskill is a wonderful character, a priest with his own past who is forced to look for answers when he returns to a parish close to his childhood home. In
The Bishop's Man,
Linden MacIntyre tells an important story with sensitivity and integrity. A remarkable book! (EEW)
