When detective Harry Bosch's daughter moved to Hong Kong with her mother, the ex-FBI professional card player
Eleanor Wish, I wondered if
Michael Connelly would ever do a book set in Hong Kong.
Well, now I have my answer:
YES. And what a book!
Connelly has been compressing his style as of late,
paring it down, rather like
Elmore Leonard, so there a no wasted words and the
action moves even faster. This is a book that moves as fast as a high-speed bullet train. Starting with the supposedly
routine murder of a downtown L.A. liquor store owner, the case starts picking up momentum and complications, which seem
to involve Triad gangs and, eventually, the kidnapping of Harry's daughter in Hong Kong. There's also a
major development to the entire series in this book (it's a shocker, but I'm not going to say so, sorry,
no spoilers here!) that will blow avid readers socks off. Suffice to say that nothing in a Bosch book is
ever simple and people (including Harry) are going to suffer the consequences of their actions.
Fans of
the series aren't going to be disappointed by this high-speed emotional roller coaster ride. (BH)
