Spud Spud

Jon Van De Ruit

It’s 1990. Apartheid is crumbling. Nelson Mandela has just been released from prison. And Spud Milton – a 13-year-old prepubescent choir-boy – is about to start his first year at an elite boys-only boarding school in Durban, South Africa. Spud is a rowdy boarding school romp full of illegal midnight swims and catastrophic holidays as a young man takes his first hilarious steps towards manhood.

Egghead (CANADIAN!)

Egghead

A perfect representation of the bully, the bullied and the bystander. Will is the perfect target for any bully, he writes poetry, is into ants, and wears fake turtlenecks. Katie is Will’s friend, who is finding that defending Will in high school now comes at a real cost. Devan has always been friends with bully, Shane, but is learning that perhaps mindlessly backing him up is not the best plan. Told from three points of view – Will’s, Katie’s, and Devan’s - this well-written and brutally honest story held my attention from page one.

Ophelia Ophelia

Lisa Klein

In this re-imagining of the story of Hamlet, Ophelia takes center stage. Ophelia catches the attention of the captivating, dark-haired Prince Hamlet, and their love blossoms in secret. But bloody deeds soon turn Denmark into a place of madness, and Ophelia must choose between her love for Hamlet and her own life. In desperation, Ophelia devises a treacherous plan to escape from Elsinore forever…with one dangerous secret.

Rash

Rash

It’s the late 21st century and the United Safer States of America (USSA) has become a nation obsessed with safety. Bo Marsden used to think the harsh laws protected society, but when he’s sentenced to 3 years of manual labour for a temper tantrum, he’s suddenly not so down with the law. Working in a prison factory in the Canadian tundra, he is forced to start thinking about the society in which he grew up and the situation it landed him in. A great read for fans of books like the Stormbreaker and Cherub series.
