Toby: A Man

By Todd Babiak
Toby: A Man

This is the fourth novel by well-known Edmonton writer Todd Babiak. In the beginning pages of the book, Toby seems to define metrosexuality. He is a rather pompous young man with money to burn, living in Montreal, driving the best car, wearing the best clothes and frequenting the best shops, clubs, and gymnasiums. The host of a weekly television shown focused on etiquette, he has a rich girlfriend and a strange collection of psuedo-intellectual friends. But when his father is in a mysterious accident, he starts to crumble, losing his job, his car and his girlfriend, and is reduced to living in his parents’ basement suite. Just when he thinks he can go no lower he "inherits" Hugo, a two-year old with an unstable francophone mother. With Todd's usual offbeat humor and charm we watch Toby learn how to grow up - learning that money isn't everything and that there are things far more important than bow-ties and silk handkerchiefs.(EEW)
